Confidential advice and support

Rape

Rape, a serious crime, is the act of sexual intercourse without consent, which can involve beatings, physical restraint or the use of drugs.

After a rape assault the victim may have difficulty in concentrating or sleeping. Their emotions may include fear, anger, disbelief or even shame because of what has happened.

Remember:

  • A rape victim has no choice; their consent was never sought or considered. They cannot be blamed for what has happened.
  • A large number of victims are raped by someone they know and therefore initially felt at ease with.
  • The majority of rape assaults are carried out either at the victim’s or assailant’s home.
  • Status is not a factor, men/women of every age, class and background have experienced rape.
