Sexual Harassment

This is bullying which used to be dismissed as a form of fun! Sexist remarks, innuendo, smutty comments, inappropriate touch and suggestions, designed as a self-gratifying, ego boosting exercise by an insecure person trying to exert control and authority over another person they deem as being subordinate in comparison to themself.

Up until the 1980's men used to get away with being overt sexual predators, women were seen as far less so. This sort of behaviour was not reported on in the vast majority of cases due to the fact that women were seen as being somehow responsible for the men's sexual harassment of them or even sexual attacks by them. It was commonly remarked and reported on with comments, such things as the woman wore bright red lipstick and nail varnish (???) and a mini skirt. As if somehow it couldn't have been the abusers fault, and intimating that the woman was in the wrong and 'asking for it' by virtue of the fact that she wore these things!

Thankfully those times have passed, although it is still an uphill battle to take these crimes through the judicial process.
